What to expect

Your first class, step by step.

No experience, no fitness requirement and no pressure. Here's exactly what happens.

  1. Step 01

    Pick a class

Book any class on the schedule. They're all open to first-timers. Kids train Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings; adults can start in Gi Basics, Monday to Thursday at 7 PM.

Two adult students slap hands before a training round
  2. Step 02

    Arrive 15 minutes early

Meet the staff and Professor Lee, sign a quick waiver and take a tour. A clean gi is provided for your free class. Just wear athletic clothes underneath.

A coach kneels to tie the belt of a young student before class
  3. Step 03

    Train at your own pace

Warm up, learn the technique of the day and drill it with a partner. Coaches stay close, and you'll leave knowing more than when you walked in.

“My 10 year old has a quiet temperament… ever since she started training at Shonen she definitely gained confidence and became more secure.”

First-class questions.

All questions

Do I need experience or to be in shape to start?

No. Most of our students walked in with zero grappling experience. Adults can start in our Gi Basics class, which runs Monday through Thursday at 7:00 PM and focuses on fundamentals, and your conditioning will build naturally as you train.

What should I wear to my first class?

A clean gi is provided for your free class, so wear an athletic top and pants or shorts to go under it. Please remove jewelry, trim your nails and bring flip-flops or sandals for walking off the mat, plus a water bottle. For no-gi classes, wear a rashguard and shorts without zippers or pockets.

When should I arrive for my first class?

Please try to arrive fifteen minutes early so you can meet the staff and instructor, sign a waiver, and take a tour of the facility.

Can parents watch?

Yes. Parents are welcome to watch from the lounge. Per our code of conduct, please don't coach from the sideline; our coaches have it covered.
